I hopped aboard the Pokemon Gijinka bandwagon a year later. It was exactly a year ago today, Oscar Night, that I have heard of the Gijinka designs. I strayed away for a while thinking it was another trend, like Animal Magnetism in 2001. Well, I decided to do a Gijinka variant of Persian.
Mind you, this version of Persian is different from the art design in the infamous set of fanart. From a costume designer's perspective, the outfit must reflect what the character is all about. The original design lacked creativity and character. A yellow skin tight suit? No thank you. If Persian is the "classy cat" Pokemon, it calls for sophistication and elegance.
I purchased the fabric from Kashcool's and a hole in the wall dollar store. I used a pattern originally intended for a Breakfast at Tiffany's cosplay, but I realized it was the wrong design. It was a vintage Vogue evening gown pattern. The trick was getting the bodice together. It had a very unique shape to it to put together - like most Vogue patterns.
I was able to complete the dress in one day. Again, I detest doing curved hems, but I'm still impressed by the amount of work done.
And next on the "To Do" list for Persian is figure out the gloves. I really don't know how to make custom gloves. If anyone can point me to a tutorial or a basic pattern for opera length gloves, it would be very much appreciated. I do have a blonde wig (for Elle Woods and Miria) to go with the yellow color palette. A cigarette holder doesn't sound too bad.

If it's one thing I haven't mastered in sewing, it's collars. This is a commission for the Pokemon: Diamond and Pearl groupage. My friend wanted to be Ash, so I said I'd make her one. The base was no problem. Easy lining and easy cotton. The hardest part was modifying the McCall's pattern to look like Ash.
The yellow part was used from my leftover Nadia fabric. One fold. Press. Inside Out. Press.Trying to get it even, matching end points, and getting it to fall on the armhole were huge challenges. Don't get me started on the collar. I had to insert wire to get it to stand up like it does in the photo. As mentioned before, I don't have much experience drafting patterns for collars, but close enough should be fine.
Now to have a Pikachu sit on Ash's shoulder...
Can you believe I made all three of the Diamond and Pearl gang?
Pokemon Diamond and Pearl should be renamed - Pokemon: See My Vest! A breakdown shall we?
Ash: Vest with a funky 80s collar.
Brock: Yeah, same vest.
Dawn: I used a vest pattern when I made it.
Suffice to say, I can't believe I'm making most of the main cast's outfits. I'm really looking forward taking pictures with the group. While working on this project, I watched the English dub of Rise of Darkrai. I've always loved Pokemon since David Lettermen made fun of it on December 1997.
While people are scrambling to do the human-esque designs that are floating around, I'll stick with the people of Pokemans!
This is progress on a Brock that I've added lining too. It took me an entire afternoon. What I did was I fixed those fake pockets with interfacing and lining. I traced a pattern out of newspaper to figure out the lining shape. There was tons and tons of ironing involved. The hardest part was the neckline.
Here's the final product. I've draped it over my mom's green blouse for comparison.
